The Better Human Project

Your life is too precious not to make it the greatest story you've ever told.

a 1-month journey of self-discovery

Your life is far too precious not to make it the most powerful story you've ever told. Yet most of us just fall into that story based on decisions made by our parents, our genetics, or things that happened to us. It's time to take back control. It's time to intentionally craft the narrative of the life you want to live.

The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.
— Mark Twain

the science behind better human

Better Human was developed by 5-time Emmy-Award winning Stillmotion. Better Human uses the patent-pending Muse Storytelling Process to provide a structure and framework for creating profound change within your life. Stillmotion has taught storytelling in over a dozen countries, in hundreds of workshops, and on the legendary stages of Sundance, TedX, and the United Nations.

You are living a story

From the day you're born, you're told a story of who you are, what's possible for you and your place in this world. Whether it be from your parents, friends, society, or culture–all of these voices come together and shape your Core Narrative.

Here's the thing–it's all just a fabricated story that you fell into. The insidious part about this story you've been living is that it goes so deep that it becomes entirely invisible. The walls of your box have been present for so long that the story you've been living is mistaken for what is–for truth. But the story is just that–a story–and it's within your power to radically shape that story and unlock an entirely new level of possibility for you and your life.

Perception is reality

If you perceive something as real, then it is real within its consequences. In other words, it doesn't matter whether the story has an ounce of truth to it, its impact on you and your life are entirely real.

Through the application of story and the Muse Storytelling process, we'll thoughtfully disentangle the story from reality. Once we peel away the layers, only then can we start carefully constructing the story, and life, that you want to live.

Using Muse, you and your cohort will go through a series of exercises that are designed to help you fully appreciate who you are, while also gaining clarity of purpose. You will develop your own personal defined purpose as a series of Keywords that you're inspired to bring to life. The moment you gain a clear sense of your purpose, along with actionable ways to bring it to life, you'll feel incredibly empowered.

With a clarity of purpose, you'll then craft a new narrative for yourself, one that is full of possibility, one that honors the greatest parts of you, and one that unites your passion with what you're capable of contributing to the world.

The Better Human Project is about far more than just helping you feel better about yourself. Through the 1-month journey of self-discovery, you'll feel alive and empowered unlike ever before. With that, you'll craft your first Major Change Project, something that you're excited to bring to life within one of your communities.

No one will bring back the years; restore you to yourself. Life will follow the path it began to take, and will neither reverse nor check its course. It will cause no commotion to remind you of its swiftness, but glide on quietly.

As it started out on its first day, so it will run on, nowhere pausing or turning aside.

What will be the outcome? You have been preoccupied while life hastens on. Meanwhile death will arrive, and you have no choice in making yourself available for that.
— Seneca, on the shortness of life

How better human works

weekly online webinar

At the core of Better Human is a weekly webinar where you'll join your entire cohort and be led through a series of exercises by one of our certified Cohort Leaders (whom you will choose when signing up). Attendance to each webinar is required, as this is where many of the breakthroughs happen.

in-depth online course

In addition to the weekly webinars, you'll get access to an in-depth online course designed to support you on your journey. You'll find tutorials to help explain the science behind the program, inspirational stories, as well as how-to videos to ensure that you see step-by-step what's expected each week.

weekly assignments

Each webinar will conclude with 2-3 assignments that you'll be expected to complete within the week. Much of the success of Better Human comes not just from developing a new story, but also from taking action. We've designed these exercises to take no more than three hours per week.

Community Support

Your connection to the community–everybody else in your cohort–is a critical part of how much you'll gain from Better Human. You'll be paired up with somebody else in your cohort, along with having two community leaders that are always available for additional support.

Weekly Support Hour

In addition to the weekly webinar, there is also an open support hour hosted by your Cohort Leader. Attendance to the support hour isn't required, but it is incredibly helpful for when you hit a roadblock and are in need of some one-on-one guidance.

Access to our PROPRIETARY software

Much of the work inside Better Human is done with our software Storybuilder. When you enroll in this program, you'll also be given access to our software and guidance on how everything works. This tool has been specifically developed to help drive incredible results inside Better Human.

Monsters exist, but they are too few in number to be truly dangerous. More dangerous are the common men, the functionaries ready to believe and to act without asking questions.

Meet Your Cohort Leaders

Several years ago I was awakened from a life of complacency. For 15 years I had placed my dreams on hold, choosing to create a 'responsible' life instead of chasing my dream to be a filmmaker. Then one day I dedicated myself to a new narrative. I’d become a filmmaker, and I’d start by telling my story. The result is “I’m Fine, Thanks” a documentary that explores why people exchange their dreams for a scripted lifestyle.

I’m a Cohort Leader for Better Human because it's the perfect convergence of my two greatest passions in life, storytelling and encouraging people to live bigger.

Nine days after my daughter was born, my husband rushed me to the hospital because I suddenly couldn't see. Due to a rare postpartum condition, I narrowly escaped having a serious stroke. For years I had been talking about wanting to make films, but I never actually did anything about it. I told myself I was too busy being a mom. I reasoned that I already had a thriving photography business and it was too late in my career to change course. I was hiding behind excuses because I was afraid of failing. But when I was confronted with the reality that no day is promised, that life can shift in an instant, I knew I had to rethink the story I was telling myself.

In the three years since my medical wake-up call, I have collaborated with amazing people to make two feature films. I have fallen deeply in love with the power of story. I have discovered that I am passionate about making a difference for women in film, on screen and behind the camera. I have learned that being fearless doesn't mean you don't have any fear, it means you face the fear and you do it anyway.

I'm a Cohort Leader for Better Human because I want to empower women to live fearless lives and to believe that their stories matter.

Early in 2015 I lost my mother to suicide during the depressive end of her bipolar. The bipolar took much from her, but the biggest thing she lost was her sense of purpose in this world. Her death nearly killed me as well. Understanding the story I'd been telling myself about her illness, along with my role in it all, was the defining moment in my journey.

I'm a five-time Emmy-Award winning storyteller and the founder of the Muse Storytelling process. I'm a Cohort Leader for Better Human because I find it incredibly fulfilling to play a role in helping others to live a life full of purpose and possibility.

Stories of lives re-written

I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.
